Zapp was a project created by VocaLink, a major UK payments infrastructure company. Launched in 2014, its mission was to enable real-time mobile payments directly from a customer's bank account to a merchant, bypassing traditional card networks. The service was designed to be integrated into existing mobile banking apps. In 2016, Mastercard acquired VocaLink, and the technology and branding behind Zapp were subsequently absorbed and evolved into the "Pay by Bank app" service, which continues the mission of facilitating secure, real-time account-to-account payments.
