Founded in 1891 in Atlanta, Georgia, SunTrust Banks, Inc. grew to become one of the largest financial services holding companies in the United States. Its primary business was providing a full spectrum of financial services, including deposit, credit, trust, and investment services to retail, business, and institutional clients. In December 2019, SunTrust completed a "merger of equals" with BB&T Corporation to create Truist Financial Corporation, the sixth-largest U.S. bank by assets at the time. Following the merger, the SunTrust brand and name were phased out and fully replaced by the Truist brand by early 2022.
