The Road Accident Fund is a South African state-supported entity established by the Road Accident Fund Act, 1996. Its primary mission is to provide social insurance cover to individuals injured or to dependents of those killed in motor vehicle accidents within the borders of South Africa. The fund covers medical expenses, loss of earnings, and general damages for serious injuries, and it provides compensation for funeral expenses and loss of support for dependents in fatal accidents. The RAF is primarily funded by a levy on petrol and diesel sales.
