Originally spun off from J.P. Morgan in 1998, RiskMetrics Group became a prominent independent provider of risk management software and data, most notably for its Value at Risk (VaR) methodologies. The company also expanded into corporate governance services, particularly after acquiring Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS). In 2010, RiskMetrics was acquired by MSCI Inc. for approximately $1.55 billion. Today, the products, data, and methodologies developed by RiskMetrics are fully integrated into MSCI's extensive portfolio of risk and performance analytics tools, serving a global client base of institutional investors, asset managers, and financial institutions.
