Founded in 1992 as the North Carolina Community Development Initiative, the organization's mission is to foster economic justice and community resilience by investing in individuals and organizations. It operates as a U.S. Treasury-certified CDFI, providing fair and flexible loans, business coaching, and valuable connections to underserved small businesses and community-focused projects across North Carolina. In 2022, the organization rebranded to "thread" to better reflect its work of weaving together capital, coaching, and connections to strengthen the fabric of communities.
