Created in 1981 by the Missouri General Assembly, the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA) is a quasi-governmental, not-for-profit entity dedicated to alleviating the burden of student debt. It is one of the nation's leading student loan servicers, contracted by the U.S. Department of Education to manage and service a significant portfolio of federal student loans, including Direct Loans and Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) loans. In addition to its federal servicing, MOHELA also originates its own private student loans. The company's stated mission is to provide outstanding customer service and support to student loan borrowers throughout their repayment journey.
