Founded in 1906, Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company was a key U.S. subsidiary of the Canadian firm Great-West Lifeco. It specialized in providing life insurance, retirement products, and annuities to individuals, businesses, and institutional clients. Over the years, it grew significantly, particularly in the 401(k) and retirement plan administration market. In 2014, the company's retirement services division was rebranded to Empower Retirement. The remaining life insurance and annuity businesses have been consolidated under other affiliated entities, and the Great-West brand is no longer used for new U.S. business, with all operations now falling under the Empower brand.
