Founded in 2000 by Steven M. H. Wallman, Folio Institutional (as part of Folio Financial, Inc.) was a pioneering brokerage and financial technology company. Its mission was to provide registered investment advisors (RIAs) and other financial professionals with a comprehensive, low-cost platform for custody, brokerage, and portfolio management. The platform was known for its innovative features like fractional share trading, model-based portfolio management (known as "folios"), and a flat-fee subscription pricing model. In May 2020, Goldman Sachs announced its acquisition of Folio Financial to expand its services to the RIA market. Subsequently, in 2021, Goldman Sachs sold the Folio Institutional clearing and custody business to Apex Clearing Corp.
