CLS Group
Information by Research TrustFinance
CLS Group is a systemically important financial market utility (FMU) that operates the world's largest multicurrency cash settlement system. Founded in 2002 to address the risks associated with FX settlement (known as Herstatt risk), CLS allows its members to settle FX trades using a "payment versus payment" (PvP) mechanism, ensuring that the final transfer of one currency occurs only if the final transfer of the other currency also takes place. This process eliminates the risk of a party paying out the currency it sold but not receiving the currency it bought. CLS is owned by its members, which are among the world's largest financial institutions, and is regulated by the U.S. Federal Reserve Board.
