Founded in 1926, the Chicago Municipal Employees Credit Union (CMECU) is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial institution. Its mission is to promote thrift among its members and provide them with a source for credit at fair and reasonable rates. As a cooperative, it returns earnings to members in the form of lower loan rates, higher savings rates, and fewer fees. Membership is limited to employees and retirees of the City of Chicago, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Schools, and other specific local government units, as well as their immediate family members.
