Le Département de la Charente-Maritime is a French territorial collectivity, an administrative division of the state located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its mission is not commercial but rather to serve the public interest. Its key responsibilities include social action and solidarity (aid for the elderly, disabled, and children), management of departmental roads, public transport, the construction and maintenance of middle schools (collèges), and promoting local economic development, tourism, and culture. It is managed by an elected assembly, the Departmental Council.
