The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is the governmental organization responsible for the administration of the state of Pennsylvania, one of the original thirteen colonies of the United States. It operates under a constitution and is structured into three branches: the executive, led by the Governor; the legislative, consisting of the bicameral General Assembly (the House of Representatives and the Senate); and the judicial, headed by the state Supreme Court. Its mission is to serve the public by providing essential services, including education, transportation, public safety, health and human services, environmental protection, and economic development, while upholding the laws and protecting the rights of its citizens.
