The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is the primary U.S. federal regulatory agency for the derivatives markets. Established in 1974, its mission is to foster open, transparent, competitive, and financially sound markets and to protect market users and their funds, consumers, and the public from fraud, manipulation, and abusive practices related to derivatives and other products that are subject to the Commodity Exchange Act. The CFTC oversees designated contract markets, swap execution facilities, derivatives clearing organizations, and various market intermediaries.
