Founded on January 28, 1950, the Banco Central de Costa Rica (BCCR) is the autonomous public institution responsible for directing the country's monetary and exchange rate policies. Its primary mission is to maintain the internal and external stability of the national currency, the colón, and to ensure the efficiency and proper functioning of Costa Rica's financial and payment systems (SINPE). The BCCR also acts as the state's financial advisor and banker, manages international monetary reserves, and compiles and publishes the country's main economic statistics.
