Originally founded as Accion East, the organization was a nonprofit and certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) dedicated to providing capital, coaching, and connections to small business owners, with a focus on women, people of color, and low-to-moderate-income entrepreneurs. In 2019, Accion East and its U.S. Accion partners merged with Opportunity Fund to create Accion Opportunity Fund, combining decades of experience to become the nation's leading nonprofit lender to small businesses. Its mission is to create an inclusive financial system and empower entrepreneurs who have been historically left behind.
