One of the major intangible asset classes carried on institutional balance sheets is intellectual property (IP). Like other assets classes with difficulty to measure future cash flows, this class could be tradable and realise value through association into a basket of like subjects. For example, if one intended to invest in autonomous vehicles, Google and Tesla stand out as opportunities; but the investment would represent only a small allocation to this sub strategy of each company. In fact, much of the intellectual property underlying autonomous vehicles has a vintage which pre-dates Google’s interest or Tesla existence and is diffused in public institutions.
