The company served as the primary supplier for thousands of independently owned and operated grocery stores and also operated its own retail banners, including Cub Foods, Shop 'n Save, and Hornbacher's. After facing significant financial challenges and strategic shifts, Supervalu was acquired by United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) in October 2018 for approximately $2.9 billion.
