Introduced on February 1, 1884, Postal Life Insurance (PLI) is a government-operated life insurance scheme in India managed by the Department of Post. Initially a welfare scheme for postal employees, its coverage has since expanded to include employees of Central and State Governments, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), defence and paramilitary forces, government-aided educational institutions, and other specified sectors. PLI's mission is to provide low-premium, high-bonus life insurance coverage to its eligible clientele, operating as a key social security instrument for government employees.
