Callidus Capital Corporation was a specialty finance firm that provided senior-secured, asset-based loans and other forms of financing to companies unable to obtain funding from conventional lenders. Founded in 2003 and managed by private equity firm The Catalyst Capital Group Inc., Callidus focused on distressed and mid-market companies primarily in Canada and the United States. The company went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX: CBL) in 2014. It was known for its high-interest loans, aggressive recovery tactics, and its controversial leadership. After facing significant public scrutiny, shareholder losses, and numerous lawsuits, the company was taken private by Catalyst in early 2019 and subsequently filed for creditor protection under the CCAA in October 2019, effectively ending its normal business operations.
