Originally part of the Intesa Sanpaolo banking group, Mercury Payment Services S.p.A. was established as a major player in the Italian merchant acquiring and payment services market. The company provided a comprehensive suite of solutions, including the installation and management of POS (Point of Sale) terminals, e-commerce payment gateways, and secure transaction processing. In 2017, it was acquired by Istituto Centrale delle Banche Popolari Italiane (ICBPI), which was subsequently rebranded as Nexi Group. As part of Nexi's corporate restructuring to streamline its payment services, Mercury Payment Services S.p.A. was fully merged by incorporation into Nexi Payments S.p.A. effective October 1, 2022, and now operates under the Nexi brand.
