Founded in 1845 as the National Bank of Akron, FirstMerit Corporation grew to become a prominent regional bank holding company. It offered a full suite of financial services including community and commercial banking, wealth management, investment, and insurance services. Headquartered in Akron, Ohio, FirstMerit operated hundreds of branches and ATMs primarily across the Midwestern United States. In August 2016, the company was acquired by Huntington Bancshares Inc. for $3.4 billion, and all FirstMerit branches and services were converted to the Huntington National Bank brand.
