Founded in 1995 by Timothy Barakett, Atticus Capital was a global investment management firm that grew to become one of the world's largest and most influential activist hedge funds. At its peak in 2007, the firm managed approximately $20 billion in assets. The fund was known for its event-driven and value-oriented investment strategy, often taking large, concentrated positions in public companies and actively engaging with management to push for changes aimed at increasing shareholder value. In August 2009, Barakett announced his decision to retire from the hedge fund industry and return the firm's capital (then around $3 billion) to investors, leading to the winding down and closure of the fund in 2010.
