The Financial Services Commission (FSC) in Jamaica is a key regulatory authority established to oversee and ensure the proper functioning of the country's financial services sector. Formed on August 2, 2001, by the Financial Services Commission Act, the FSC replaced earlier regulatory bodies including the Office of the Superintendent of Insurance and Unit Trusts, as well as the Securities Commission. The FSC's mandate covers a broad spectrum of financial services, excluding deposit-taking activities. It is responsible for regulating and supervising institutions involved in non-deposit-taking financial services, which include insurance, securities, and the disposal or acquisition of units under registered unit trusts. Additionally, the FSC's jurisdiction has been extended to cover the regulation of national and international virtual asset service providers, trust service providers, and the enforcement of Anti-Money Laundering & Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CFT) regulations.
