The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is an independent agency of the United States government responsible for consumer protection in the financial sector. Established by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act in 2010, the CFPB's mission is to make consumer financial markets work for consumers, responsible providers, and the economy as a whole. It protects consumers from unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices and takes action against companies that break the law. The agency oversees banks, credit unions, securities firms, mortgage-servicing operations, foreclosure relief services, debt collectors, and other financial companies operating in the United States.
