Cryptopia Limited was a global cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in Christchurch, New Zealand. Founded in 2014, it gained popularity by listing a vast number of small-cap and emerging altcoins, serving a niche market of traders. In January 2019, the exchange suffered a catastrophic security breach, resulting in the theft of an estimated $16 million USD worth of cryptocurrency. Unable to recover from the losses and subsequent investigation, the company was placed into liquidation in May 2019, with Grant Thornton appointed as the liquidator to manage the complex process of recovering and distributing remaining assets to account holders.
