Founded by cryptographer and computer scientist David Chaum in 1989, DigiCash was a groundbreaking company in the field of digital payments and privacy. Its flagship product, eCash, used advanced cryptographic protocols to allow for secure and untraceable online transactions, a concept that was decades ahead of its time and a direct precursor to modern cryptocurrencies. Despite its innovative technology and successful pilot programs with several banks, the company struggled to achieve widespread commercial adoption before the boom of e-commerce and ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 1998.
