Founded by Stefan Thomas, former CTO of Ripple, Coil's mission was to create a better business model for the web. Its primary service was a subscription-based membership that allowed users to support creators by streaming micropayments directly to them as they consumed content, offering an alternative to advertising and paywalls. The service utilized the open-source Interledger Protocol for payments. In November 2022, Coil announced it was sunsetting its membership and web monetization products to focus on new projects and contributing to the Interledger Foundation.
