Founded in 2017, Caper pioneered the development of AI-powered and computer vision-enabled shopping carts to create a seamless, cashier-less retail experience. Their flagship products, the Caper Cart and Caper Counter, use sensors and cameras to automatically detect items as customers add them, eliminating the need for traditional checkout lines. In October 2021, Caper was acquired by Instacart for approximately $350 million to bolster Instacart's "Connected Stores" initiative, which provides brick-and-mortar retailers with the technology needed to enhance the in-store shopping experience.
