Founded as BitX in Singapore in 2013 by Marcus Swanepoel and Timothy Stranex, the company's mission is to "upgrade the world to a better financial system." Initially focused on emerging markets, BitX provided a secure and accessible platform for Bitcoin services. In 2017, the company rebranded to Luno to reflect its global expansion and a broader vision beyond just Bitcoin. Luno has since moved its headquarters to London and expanded its services to include a range of cryptocurrencies. In 2020, it was acquired by the Digital Currency Group (DCG), a major global investor in the blockchain sector.
