Founded in 2017 by Diogo Mónica and Nathan McCauley, Anchorage Digital aims to advance institutional participation in the digital asset class. The company provides a platform offering a full range of crypto-native financial services, including secure custody, staking, governance, trading, and financing. A significant milestone in its history occurred in January 2021 when it received a charter from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to become the first federally chartered digital asset bank, officially operating as Anchorage Digital Bank, National Association. This charter allows it to provide crypto custody services as a "qualified custodian" for institutions.
